Modular Cabinet System for Base Station Expansion

Dynamic Battery Sales & Service offers the low cost battery enclosure system shown below. This system is often used for many outdoor applications that require extended battery backup or additional equipment. These enclosures are built from a modular design and are shipped “knock-down” in a compact package. This saves on shipping, reduces potential damage in transit and makes them easily transportable to unconventional locations. Once assembled, all four sides (and top if necessary) are easily removed for access. There are many options and configurations making these infinitely versatile. These Modular Cabinets are lower cost than conventional cabinets.

Racks can be engineered horizontal or vertical for creative, high density equipment applications. In battery applications, they can be configured for ten year or twenty year battery products, for flooded or VRLA products. We provide maximum flexibility in our design considerations including UL Listing. The UL listing provides immediate acceptance with building inspectors and code enforcement officials. A UL listing is very helpful in many jurisdictions where code enforcement and zoning restriction are very rigid.

The optional Air-conditioning unit is factory set to 77°F (25°C) for optimum battery. This design is compatible with all standard power boards and batteries. These enclosures can also be manufactured for field assembly allowing them to be disassembled for a lower cost deployment or manual transport to difficult locations such as mountaintops or roof tops and easily reassembled on site.

  • Certification: Rated NEMA-3R, built to NEMA-4 standards except for vents.
  • Wind resistance: Designed to meet ASE 7-98 wind standard (with base wind speeds of up to 150mph) as required by the 2001 Florida Building Code.
  • Material: Aluminum 5052-H32
  • Finish: Powder coated in Polyester ‘Ultra Light Gray’ (Lucent Color) with a ‘Zinc-Rich’ undercoat for coastal conditions.
  • Insulation: Minimum R-4
  • Access: Front and rear doors with padlockable 3-point latches. Stainless steel pins in precision aluminum hinges. Doors to be field removable.
  • Cooling/heating: Heating and air conditioning to maintain 77F in designated location. 110vac powered unless specified otherwise.
  • Design: breakdown construction to allow field disassembly for transport to rooftops, etc. for final assembly.
  • Ventilation/purge: Equipped with brushless dc fans with a flow rating equal or higher than three (3) times the internal volume (ie: 180 CFM for a 60 cubic foot interior).

Maintenance access for brushless dc fans is from inside the cabinet. Provide screened air intake vents and exhausts that resist wind driven rain entry.

  • Grounding: Provide a main cabinet ground bar with provisions for 2-1/0 cables and 7-#6 cables. Also provide 10 feet of #2 tin plated solid copper wire.

Controls and Alarms

  • Hydrogen sensor/alarm installed in top above batteries to detect ½ of the lower explosive limit of hydrogen (1000 ppm H2 or lower, typically 400 ppm). The alarm powers the fan from the nominal battery voltage.
  • Provide a set of isolated alarm contacts that will change state (normally close on alarm) if the detected hydrogen is not reduced below the detector limit within 5 minutes.
  • Provide door alarm switches with a ‘pull-to-bypass’ for operator use while on site.

Battery Related

  • Enclosure is sized to provide an adequate area for the intended battery set(s) with the battery manufacturer’s recommended clearances.
  • Provide a battery pullout fuse or circuit breaker at the C/4 rating of the battery. If multiple batteries are used, at least two such fuses or circuit breakers are to be provided. The design should support use of fuses up to 800 amps with adequate wire sizes.
  • Provide a pair of flexible UL listed battery cables coordinated with the fuse/Circuit breaker rating per the National Electrical Code (NEC) (ie: 250 mcm or larger cables if a 400-amp overcurrent device is used).
  • Provide a locally derived 5-amp circuit for the hydrogen detector/purge system.
  • Optional: Provide a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker alarm circuit.

Required Installation Specifications

  • Use separate conduits for the ac and dc wiring from the main cabinet, sized according to the NEC.
  • All current carrying lugs to be crimped per lug manufacturer’s specification.
  • Seal any cabinet seams exposed after remote assembly using sealant included with the cabinet.
